This weekend i have been mind mapping different ideas i could do my Inquiry about, at the moment i am still very much deciding what i should do it about, One topic i found very interesting is

'how the dance industry affects mental health'

I think this is not talked about often enough as whether it be whilst in training or professionally there is always a pressure to be the best and often dancers and performers can be harsh on themselves as we are all striving for perfection. This can be in so many different forms, Such as your appearance and body image, Your talent or how 'Good' you are and so many other things. I think especially whilst in training it can be tough for an individual as you constantly will compare yourself to your class mates and this can either be a healthy way to improve your skills it can also be very detrimental to mental health if you become obsessive over looking in the mirror or comparing yourself.

I found this very thought provoking and i may use this idea for my inquiry.

  1. Hi Oona,

I think this topic is a really interesting one, there are so many avenues of this topic that can effect people in different ways. When I looked at the use of mirrors in dance within my practice in Module One I found a lot of research on how mirrors in dance can effect ballet dancers in particular and can cause anorexia. I feel like its a bit of a taboo subject though as everyone wants to think of the performance industry as such a happy place. I will be posting my inquiry topic soon, looking forward to reading more about yours. Sam

    1. Thank you for this comment i agree that it is abit of a taboo subject as no-one talks about the effects that dancing in front of a mirror all day has on an individual, i also think a lot of people keep to themselves that they are struggling and i would like to see what support is out there for dancers i will visit your blog soon , Thank you Oona

Hello my name is Oona Thompson welcome to my blog After yesterdays Skype call I found it very helpful in giving me an overview of the course. I have gathered a greater understanding of the degree and what I should expect over the next term. I learnt on uni hub when I log in you can go to "my learning" and then "BAPP" in this you can see your module handbook which I have since been reading through. I have also looked at the academic calendar and looking at the dates putting the dates of the Skype calls in my calendar so I can work around it. We were told by Helen on the call the deadline for any work is the 17th of December which is an important date in my calendar insuring I am organised and can plan up to that date. I have looked at the reading materials briefly since the call to familiarise myself with what we will be studying. I was told about filling out a study plan which I have since completed and sent back as we were told we will use in our first one to...

Inquiry

I have now begun my essay introduction and my chosen inquiry is "What support systems are out there for independent dancers" This is very broad but my focus is particularly on those with body image struggles/eating disorders and also those with injury as a lot of thought goes into their physical well being whereas there isn't a lot that goes into their emotional and mental well being. I have chosen this as my inquiry topic as i think it would be great to understand different peoples experiences and journeys through dance, in order to help those in the future. Any ideas on what you think about this topic would be appreciated greatly Also how are you all getting on choosing which methodology's you are using to get your information be it interviews,  questionnaires or any other ideas you have ? I would love to hear your ideas Oona
Methodology/ Methods Upon reading the module handbook i havent yet come to terms with the difference between methodology and method , has anybody else found this and if so please comment below your ideas
